We had a wonderful thunderstorm
today.  Lots of thunder, lightening,
some pea-sized hail, & big heavy raindrops.  When the rain slowed to a drizzle I decided to check on the chicks.style="mso-spacerun: yes">
I wasn’t worried because they had been going
into the nest/roost box at night by themselves at night and had been trying to
during the day, but I keep them locked out so the old hens can lay in the nest
box.  I figured they’d go into their box
when the weather turned.  When I got
outside I didn’t hear them chirping so I was convinced they had gone into the
box.  I was wrong; they were huddled in
a corner of the coop, all wet, and shivering.
Some of them weren’t moving.
Three of them were barely breathing when I picked them up.style="mso-spacerun: yes">  I called my neighbor for help and Wes came
down to help.  He put them under running
warm water and then into a bowl of warm water until they quit shivering.style="mso-spacerun: yes">  Then we blow-dried them and wrapped them in
towels.  Between Wes, Benjaman and I we
gathered 10 hypothermic chickens and re-heated them.  I locked the rest of them into the nest/roost box and turned on
their heat lamp.  These are the pics of
the 10 chickens we saved.  They are all
doing well.  I’ll put them out with the
rest in the morning.  I’m so glad Wes
knew what to do because my only idea was to wrap them in towels and rub the
ones that weren’t moving.  I’m convinced
without Wes’s idea I would have lost at least 3 of them.style="mso-spacerun: yes">  I’m so glad they are all okay, but
especially my 2 little Wyandottes (the “Dottes”).  They were the littlest one and I have one of them really
tame.  We would have lost ¼ of our flock
if they didn’t all survive.

Bo and Jeremy cut these house numbers when Jeremy was here
last week.  Bo painted them red.style="mso-spacerun: yes">  We have to have red numbers on our house or
gate for the 911 system to be able to find us.
I don’t think they’ll miss these numbers!

Bo found some land at the actual edge of the world!style="mso-spacerun: yes">  The properties we looked at were just
beautiful!  They were everything we’ve
been looking for all these years and they were affordable.style="mso-spacerun: yes">  BUT…..the land is REALLY 100 miles from
civilization.  Datil is 25 miles from
the property (gravel & dirt roads), Magdalena is another 35 miles and
Socorro is yet another 30 miles.  Now,
those of you familiar with NM and Socorro know that I’m being kind when I say
that Socorro is civilization.  There’s a
Smiths and Wal-mart in Socorro. There’s a library in Magdalena…with 450
books.  There’s a k-6 school in Datil
with 22 students…total.  No homeschool
community, no little league, church is 45 minutes one-way and the road only
gets plowed once a winter usually and graded twice a year.style="mso-spacerun: yes">  The nearest doctor is in Magdalena, but
there’s a heliport and trained First Responders10 miles from the property.style="mso-spacerun: yes">  When faced with the reality of this
situation I just had to say…..NO WAY!!!!!
I just wish the land were closer to town and had homeschooler and little
league and I wouldn’t have to worry about weather I could get down my
road!  I guess I don’t have the
pioneering spirit that I thought I had.
Of course, Bo was wanting to buy it right NOW!  We’re going to look for something closer to civilization.style="mso-spacerun: yes">  I really hate when our dreams and desires
don’t line up!

LOVES to have his chests sprayed off when it’s hot.  I think it’s because he gets fly bites on his chest and it
soothes them.  Anyway, I hose him down
almost every day when it’s this hot.

I’ll have to get Bo to take some pics of Cinbar’s feet.style="mso-spacerun: yes">  He’s finally figured out how to help that
poor old man.  Cinbar is more sound now
than the entire time we’ve owned him (5 years).  He’s a little skinny, but he gets grain twice a day while the mares
do not (and they are NOT happy about THAT!).
He’s really showing his age though, he’s 21 years old and he’s had a
long, hard life.  I hope we can find
some property to graze him on before he dies.

All the chicks are doing great!  I bought 4 Silver Laced Wyandottes to add to the flock.style="mso-spacerun: yes">  They are 4 days younger than the rest of the
chicks.  We now have 41 chicks.style="mso-spacerun: yes">  Bo is working on the coop this weekend.style="mso-spacerun: yes">  Eventually we will have 2 coops and
runs.  The meat birds will be kept
separate with their own run so I don’t get attached.  The egg birds will have their own nest/roost box and run, but
will be given free range of the yard in the spring.  I want them to have no doubt as to where to lay their eggs and
roost!  I hate searching the yard for
eggs!  I am trying to handle the chicks
everyday so they will be more tame.  It
really helps when Peggy brings the boys down to handle them also.

Jeremy was sworn into the Marines Saturday, June 7,
2008.  He couldn’t be happier and his
Dad couldn't be prouder!  Jeremy will
finish high school and then go to boot camp the summer after graduation.style="mso-spacerun: yes">  We’re so glad we got to be there for the
swearing in.  We are so proud of the
young man Jeremy has become.  He’s also
such an inspiration to Benjaman.  Now
let’s just hope that the war is resolved quickly and Jeremy won’t have to give
his life for all of us because he’s willing to do so.  We love you, Jeremy!

We got our chicks today!
I ordered 10 Rhode Island Red hens, 14 Buff Orpington hens and 2 Buff
Orpington roosters.  They added 1 Rare
Breed chick and a Buff Orp rooster to my order.  That’s what the packing list said.  I received 25 Rhode Island Reds, 16 Buff Orps and 1 Rare
Breed.  They sent me 11 extra
chicks!  Hooray!style="mso-spacerun: yes">  I chose the Rare Breed chick to gauge their
growth on a daily basis.  I’ve been
waiting for them since April.  The
hatchery said they’ve never had so many first time chicken buyers.style="mso-spacerun: yes">  Does that tell you something?style="mso-spacerun: yes">  Either people are afraid of the diseases
that are popping up in store bought chickens or they think the economy’s going
to crash and they need to start growing their own food.style="mso-spacerun: yes">  We grow our chicks for a combination of
these reasons.  We know what they are
eating; therefore, we know what we are eating!
I’m going to keep about 15 for laying hens, 10 for breeding stock and we’ll
eat the rest.  We should be able to
manage our flock to provide new chicks enough to keep the freezer full and
never run out of the delicious eggs!  My
Rare Breed chick is exempt from freezer duty whether it’s a rooster or
not.  I’m handling it a lot so it will
be tame.  We eat all mean roosters
around here.  No floggings allowed at my
house!
